Sports Infographics, Lately.

February 23rd, 2011 by Dan Barczak

Bringing sports data to life visually is not easy to do…or at least do well. I’ve come across quite a few sports infographics lately and since baseball is just starting again, (and I’m not a fan of the NBA) here’s a few sports infographics to pass the time as the Reds warm up in sunny Arizona, including this amazing iPad app by recent Parsons New School of Design graduate Steve Varga. Check it out here, here, and here.

ESPN + Marvel FTW

November 1st, 2010 by Julie Hill

HOLY AMAZING BATMAN (Yes yes I know Batman is DC, I KNOW GEEZ) Marvel has illustrated the heck out of the new ESPN Magazine, and it is really tempting this mostly-non-sporty girl to hop over to Fountain Square News at lunch and grab a copy. More images courtesy of Chuck Anderson’s Twitter below!

ESPN College Football’s New Look

September 16th, 2010 by Julie Hill

Look, I grew up in a town which housed a Big Ten school. You could stand on my high school’s grounds and literally hit the stadium with a rock if you had a good arm. I like football. But geez, football graphics do insist on being ridiculous.

Troika’s new on-air identity:

ESPN College Football Rebrand 2010 from Troika Design Group on Vimeo.

Like, I get it. I geeeetttt itttt. I have the football childhood cred to get it. Plus I really love sweet animations, but honestly you guys? I can’t get into this at all. I know it’s supposed to be CRAZZZYYEEEE, and maybe it is just the way this reel was cut together, but I find it just kind of bleh and cluttered. It’s quite well-done, don’t get me wrong, I just…….can’t. People with TVs, is it better in the midst of an actual game? Would you pause in drunkenly throwing your OSU beer coozie at the screen to watch?

Nike Combat Uni’s

September 9th, 2010 by Dan Barczak

This website is unbelievable. Rich with innovation, Nike decided to hand-pick some of its top football partnerships and completely overhaul their uniforms for a few marquee games this season. Teams include Ohio State, Miami, TCU, Boise State, Pitt, Oregon State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Florida, and Alabama. The animations are incredible, the sound is chest pounding, and navigation is smooth.

They didn’t just create uniforms, they created stories and detailed the inspiration behind each new fashion. Reduced weight when wet, titanium belt loops, and design metaphors are called out for each team. Nike gives us a rich interactive experience worth digging into and exploring. They’ve also launched the gear in Pro Combat college football packs finished in a matte black/rugged feel. Just in time for football season. Turn the volume up.

Attention all Lawn Nerds!

May 7th, 2010 by Chris Strong

So you say you are on an unspoken quest to one-up the neighbors; specifically their lawns?

Well, lucky for you, Scotts has released its MLB Authentic Collection. What’s that mean? Well, basically that you need to completely destroy and kill-off your existing lawn and start over planting the seed blend of your favorite MLB ballpark. Talk about bragging rights with Larry next door when that grass grows in!

Great American Ball Park Grass Seed by Scotts

“What’s that Larry? You’ve used a basic fescue seed mix?! Ha! My lawn is straight out of Great American Ballpark! Look at that deep emerald green!”

Oh, and it’s important to share that Scotts only selected 5 stadiums for the MLB Authentic Collection. The turf of the Cincinnati Reds stands strong with other prestigious stadiums like Wrigley and Fenway.

Why am I sharing that point you ask? Well, it’s another reminder that Cincinnati is pretty awesome. Heck, I’m a New Yorker, born and raised, but I don’t see Yankee Stadium included in this mix.

So come check out a Reds game and visit HQ. Then go home and grow your own GABP lawn.

Case Study: Cincinnati Bengals

March 9th, 2010 by Julie Hill

Cincinnati Bengals Playoff Commemorative Program Cover

The Bengals finally made the playoffs last year and, as luck would have it, hosted the game at Paul Brown Stadium, right here in HQ’s hometown. The team wanted to create a really exciting Playoff Book to be sold during the game, and they felt HyperQuake would be a great fit for taking the design to the next level.

The goal of the project was to create a commemorative piece to showcase the Bengals’ awesome accomplishment. We all agreed that teamwork should be the primary focus of the design – the Bengals view making the playoffs as a collective achievement – with a strong emphasis on the host city of Cincinnati as well.

The end result was an exciting design that hit all of the team’s objectives and really made the Bengals come across as the high caliber team they are. Despite the fact that the game didn’t finish in the Bengals’ favor, fans can still cherish the memories, and have the playoff book to prove it.
